As both a parent and a museum educator, I’ve been learning a lot about the roles that extremely intense, deeply passionate interests can play in the lives of young children.
I’ve been learning from:
- My own family’s experiences with two sons who have both gone through a series of extremely intense interests as they’re grown from 18 months to 18 and 19 years old, respectively.
- Other families’ experiences, both my children’s friends and children I’ve met through Wonder Works, other educational institutions, and clubs.
- The research literature on children’s interests, which is both more extensive and less helpful than one might hope.
After you’ve looked at the rest of this play station, please come back and try to answer the question in the title.
